Cognitive
Strengthening brain health, decision-making, and cognitive resilience.
Cognitive performance is a critical component of long-term capability for individuals who operate in high-demand environments. Years of operational stress, concussion, blast exposure, and repetitive impacts can affect memory, attention, communication, and executive functioning—skills that are essential for effective decision making, leadership, and performance under pressure.
Expert-Led Cognitive Training for High-Demand Environments
At Virginia High Performance, cognitive training is delivered by licensed Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) who specialize in evaluating and treating cognitive communication challenges within military and high-performance populations. Their work focuses on restoring and optimizing key cognitive systems including memory, attention, problem solving, organization, and communication, which are often affected by concussion, traumatic brain injury (TBI), blast exposure, and other operational impacts.
Comprehensive Cognitive Assessment and Brain Performance Testing
Each participant begins with a comprehensive cognitive assessment, which may include standardized cognitive-linguistic testing as well as measurement of the BrainHealth Index, a holistic measure of brain performance developed by the Center for BrainHealth at the University of Texas at Dallas. These assessments help identify cognitive strengths and areas requiring targeted development.
Performance Optimization, Not Just Recovery.
Participants then engage in individualized cognitive training designed to strengthen brain performance and develop strategies that can be applied directly to real-world environments. The goal of cognitive training at VHP is not only recovery from injury but optimization of cognitive performance. By strengthening attention, communication, and executive function, participants improve decision making, manage cognitive load more effectively, and operate with greater clarity and confidence in high-pressure environments.
Key Areas of Cognitive Development
The VHP Approach to Cognitive Performance and Optimization
Attention and Focus
Strengthening the ability to sustain attention, manage distractions, and maintain focus in high-demand environments.
Memory and Information Retention
Improving memory function, recall, and the ability to retain and apply critical information.
Executive Function and Decision-Making
Enhancing planning, organization, problem solving, and decision-making under pressure.
Communication Skills
Developing clearer, more effective communication for both professional and everyday interactions.
Cognitive Processing and Efficiency
Improving the speed and efficiency of information processing to support better performance in complex environments.
Cognitive Load Management
Building the ability to manage mental fatigue and operate effectively under sustained cognitive demand.

Strategic Memory Advanced Reasoning Training (SMART)
Through our partnership with the Center for BrainHealth, participants may also complete Strategic Memory Advanced Reasoning Training (SMART), a research-based program designed to improve strategic thinking, information processing, and cognitive efficiency.
Together, these areas form the foundation of cognitive performance, enabling individuals to operate with greater clarity, efficiency, and confidence.
